It might seem exciting to move into a new residence, but packing and
unpacking stuff can really get onto your nerves! There always seems so
much to be done and not enough time! Well, here are some tips concerning
packing that might come in handy—
(1) First and foremost, decide what needs to be taken and what can be
disposed off. You never realize how much junk you have accumulated until
you are shifting residence! Things that are not of much use can be ruthlessly
discarded; what is in fairly good condition can be donated (this will
ensure that you get a tax deduction), or sold via yard sales, garage sales,
eBay, etc. The lesser stuff you have to pack, the lesser the headache!
(2) You will need plenty of strong boxes to cart your luggage—borrow
from friends if they have many. Otherwise, you can get them office supply
stores and liquor stores. It would be great if you manage to get boxes
with grid compartments for keeping glassware. Avoid buying from movers
or trucking companies unless absolutely essential—they tend to come for
a higher price.
(3) Since these are second-hand boxes, they are bound to have the old
labels still on them. Remove them or cover them. Also, ensure that there
are fresh labels on all sides of each box.
(4) Use good quality adhesive tape for your boxes so that the contents
remain safe within. This is not the time to be economical!
(5) Some people stuff and stuff as many things as they can in a single
box, to avoid carrying too many! You are going to make it too heavy to
carry, plus you risk all the contents popping out!
(6) Heavy items should be placed at the bottom, and lighter ones should
rest on them. A combination of heavy and light stuff makes it easier to
manage the boxes. Again, do not push all the weighty items to one side.
(7) Leak-proof containers are absolutely necessary for things like perfumes,
medicines, cosmetics, food items, and so on.
(8) It is best to transport delicate things like the television, stereo
system, computer, mirrors, lamps, picture frames, and so on via your car.
You do not want them to suffer any damage on the way!
(9) Food items such as grains, pastas, etc. can get spoiled on the way,
especially if you have opened the cans already and are traveling a long
distance. Get rid of them!
(10) You will not be able to sort through boxes and things as soon as
you move in. It would therefore be advisable to keep handy all the clothes
and toiletries that you will need during the first week; pack them into
a suitcase that will travel with you.
Good luck with your packing
and moving!
